After George Vanderbilt made two visits to Asheville, North Carolina, he determined it to be the perfect setting for his country home. And just two years after his first visit to the Blue Ridge Mountains, construction began on what would become the infamous Biltmore<\/a> chateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 250-room, French-inspired castle has been impeccably maintained over the past century. Self-guided tours throughout three floors and the basement of the estate lead you on a journey back in time. Original furniture is still displayed along with period clothing, art, accessories, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After exploring the Biltmore home, you can tour the surrounding property as well. Today, the 8,000-acre estate includes a conservatory, a winery, several shops and boutiques, dining options, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Belvedere Castle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The aptly named Belvedere Castle<\/a> in New York City\u2019s Central Park is one of the most iconic landmarks in the area. \u2018Belvedere\u2019 is Italian for \u2018beautiful view.\u2019 And as the second-highest point in Central Park perched atop Vista Rock, there are plenty of beautiful views to enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The castle was originally built in 1872 as a vantage point to appreciate the surrounding areas. And, today, visitors can still enjoy the views of Turtle Pond, the Great Lawn, and the neighboring skyscrapers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost 50 years after opening, the U.S. Weather Burea used the castle as a weather station. Although they moved out another 40 years later, the building is still used for rainfall measurement and weather monitoring to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Smithsonian Castle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Home to the Smithsonian Visitor Center, the Smithsonian Castle<\/a> serves as the starting point to other Smithsonian museums and nearby National Mall. It was designed by James Renwick, Jr. who drew inspiration from Romanesque and Gothic architecture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the Smithsonian Castle highlights collections from each of its 19 museums. Tours of the castle are also available on select days and times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nestled in the famed 1,000 Islands near Alexandria Bay is one of the most beautiful castles in the U.S: Boldt Castle<\/a>. Constructed on Heart Island in the early 1900s by George C. Boldt, the castle was intended to display George\u2019s love for his wife, Louise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, Louise passed before the castle was completed, and George abandoned the half-built structure. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority eventually acquired and restored the property after roughly 70 years of deterioration from the elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The castle is only accessible by water from both Canada and the U.S. Transportation is available by tour boat or personal vessel while the castle is open from May to October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
